Silver

I stare

At the seas that have turned silver.

And wonder

At the impossible certainty

Of the same colours

In the same darkness

Over every coastline

Caressed by the sea

Somewhere, in a distant land

Another poet broods

Another artist cries,

Elsewhere, a fisherman navigates

The same lonely sea;

While lovers hold hands

Thankful of the silvery waves

Filling the awkward silence

After that first kiss

What a great equalizer –

The same silver pours

In front of all these eyes;

The others are all asleep

One way or another;

They have missed the opportunity

To drink

Of this elixir

That gently tumbles on the sea

From far away

And then I realise

Not just space, it has been

The same glimmer on sea

Across time as well -

A seafarer in search of new lands

Finds solace there is light

In the emptiness of the world

A labourer on a hill

Looks at sea and feels

There is something grander

In the games of the universe.

Someone closer on land

Goes for a swim in warm waters

While yet another philosopher

Looks up, wonders

How some elements are eternal –

Thinking if in the distant future

Poets still celebrate the magic

That is silver…
