A storm in September

A clap of thunder -

Did I hear it right?

Unlike me, the monsoons fight on

A storm in September

After many clammy days

On this last day before I leave

My city becomes generous –

'Let the rains wash your ink as well

Let your diary get emptied again’

New city, blank pages

Thunder again, irresistible

I walk to the apartment terrace

Blue clouds arrive

To drown the emptiness

Of countless years

The wind picks up

That chill before the rains

I look around desperately

But there is no one around

Who bothers to enjoy the show

Ah, the pity of getting used

To the luxuries of everyday life

An empty eagle soars in the sky

At least there is someone

I smile, who has that zeal

The first drops descend

The storm picks up,

'Let the rains wash your ink as well

Let your diary get emptied again’

The winds whisper

But they stop abruptly –

My diary was always empty

It has never stopped raining

On its wet, stained pages,

I step out and at last, embrace the cold…
