Cumolus

Rounded fractals

Growing slowly, ever so slowly,

Bright, almost too white

Against skies of blue –

Ah! Beautiful, cumulus clouds.

Do they ever make you happy?

They elate me, I must admit –

But not because

Of their existence,

Rather, in what they reflect

A young boy alone,

Lonely after school

Staring out of grilled windows

In a tiny apartment in North Calcutta

Finding absolute liberty

The earth below is crammed

Tiny roads, old derelict houses

Men in red gamchas

Taking rushed afternoon baths

From time-taps

Hand rickshaws squeezing by,

The tea stall owner

Taking a break

Summer’s heat slowly squeezing

Every single breath of day

The potted plants droop

The heavy DC fan whirrs

Slowly, noisily

It too has given in

To the squalor of summer

But outside, high above

Freedom booms on God’s canvas

While the boy wonders

Why it looks

Like a still-life painting?

The painting still hangs somewhere

Neatly framed,

Ghibli-esque clouds floating

And a boy trapped, but smiling

At a large canvas frame

I return to my work-desk

The glass windows distract;

Perhaps, the clouds never moved

They remained still

Eternally still

Inching slowly

Ever so slowly

Though the world moved ahead

Sometimes looking back and smiling

At a distant summer’s cumulus days…
