Dreams of a Snowfall

I have reached a far-off place

In my lonely dreams;

Here perhaps, my trance

Shows me reflections of myself;

Brooding, grey skies,

Border villages, deserted lone

Blanched lands

While I search for the mighty Kanchenjunga

Is it all there to me? I mourn

But the skies shimmer,

Floating confetti - A flurry of snow

The joy returns,

Suddenly, as in dreamscapes

There are ebullient tourists

From the tropical nowhere of Calcutta

To a snowstorm in the hills

An old passenger in my dreams smiles,

‘We have left Tiger’s Hill

To come this far,

Sometimes we have to look

Beyond the king that is Kanchenjunga,’

I look out at the showers of snow

Indeed -

Any peak will glisten in this cold abundance

I realise the distinct shape

Of a solitary peak,

Not reaching for the skies

Just standing, waiting

To be draped by gloomy clouds

Was it Pandim? Was it Rathong?

A solitary peak

Beautiful in its aloneness

I did know

It was not Kanchenjunga

Yet, it looked like a mighty king

Even without the crown;

The snows continued

The revellers rejoiced

The peak simply existed.

My quest had ended long ago…
