It’s been years since

The old factory has been shut down,

Rust has corroded the shutters

And creepers grow

Where new age transformers

Were once manufactured

There’s nothing left,

After the initial protests,

The workers have moved

To other oases,

Some were satisfied

With their payouts

While the nameless leaders

Have moved to recreate

Their timeless success

At other organisations.

Only the last few transformers

Still seem to remember yesterday

But if you ever happen

To trespass that compound –

You may surprisingly

Not feel sorry

At the loss

That the city may seem to mourn

 For jacanas now prance

On lily pads

That crowd on the pool

At the back,

Kingfishers dart

With their kree-kree-kree

White breasted hens nest

Where porcelain bushings were stored

And frogmouths

Turn up at the banyan tree

Under which the watchman

Would take a quick nap at noon

The testing factory

Has been run over

By ferns and wild lilies;

While fishing cats scurry past

The spare windings

That never powered a machine

The old factory

Is still full of wealth

Though it earns not a single rupee,

While locals repent

‘Once upon a time

This was the place to be…’

The old watchman,

Now retired

Lives not far

If you talk to him,

He will tell you he can still hear

The hum of the transformers all day

But once he stops

You hear nothing,

Except for the Kree-kree-kree

When the kingfishers laugh,

While the coo of the doves

Dissolves in the summer’s noon…
