In
my kitchen, I stare at frozen prawns
From
the super-market,
Deveined,
shelled, ready to cook
‘Oh,
look at the tiger prawns,’
My
wife exclaims,
‘So
fleshy, can it get any better?’
My
mind starts drifting,
‘What
will you make?’ her voice fades
‘Malai,
Mustard….’
The
place seems alive,
The
fishmongers are busy screaming
Fish
for the bheto bangali,
While
I stare at a mass of prawns,
No
longer frozen
But
teeming with life
Creeping,
crawling
Their
long whiskers
Like
antennae, probing the world
I
get close to the closest
There
is something in its eye
A
black disc of nothingness
Can
it contain the Big Bang? I wonder
It
seems to stare at me
Until
the fishmonger swiftly picks it up
And
places its future
In
a black plastic bag
A
tiny galaxy at Kasba market
I
stare at the Teflon coated frying pan
It
looks like the black eye
Of
the innocent prawn,
‘So
fleshy, can it get any better?’
My
wife exclaims,
‘What
will you make?
‘Malai,
Mustard….’
I
feel the cold frozen prawns
In
a white, smartly labelled zip-lock bag…
