The fragrance of Pujo

As I press my shirt,

Something touches my heart;

I stop thinking about balance sheets

And realise

It is the smell

Of pressing a brand-new Allen Solly

Ah! That crisp smell of fresh clothes

Being worn for the first time

The floodgates of memories

Rush forth

Pujo, new clothes

Is just the beginning

The family coming together

Indulgent ice-cream

Jhal muri, Phuchka

Dad won’t mind for a change

Psychedelic lights in all colours

And no deadline to return

A small-town world,

A middle-class family

What more could you want?

It was not just Kailash

It was a boy’s universe

Coming alive for five days

The shirt is pressed,

I smile –

It was never about 5 days

It was about the humdrum

Of everyday life

For the remainder of the year

The pandal’s bamboo sticks gathered

In a corner

Once fresh hoardings

Left to fade in the weather

A ruptured dhak

Left behind by the Club

The smeared giri phota

Left on every wooden door

A few khorer putul

Waiting to return to life

And then,

All that the eye cannot see –

Birendra’s baritone voice

Still ringing in the ear

A squirrel’s tail that reminds of kash

Walking past Sitala Mandir

And wondering

How big was the event last year

Perhaps Pujo waits for us

Every day

Even when you are somewhere else

Many years away.

I stop the bioscope for the day –

There will be shirts to press next week…
